Five easy ways to #getorganised

If there’s one thing that’s going to get in the way of you having an organised mind, it’s living in a disorganised space. We’ve got tonnes of useful tips to keep your desk, your bedroom and your closet neat and tidy so that you can focus on the important things. Your room
  1. The first step to organising your room – in fact, it’s the first step to organising all of these spaces – is to declutter. You need to start your organising spree on a clean slate, and that means getting rid of anything that doesn’t serve you a purpose anymore, whether it’s old documents, forgotten stuffed toys or daggy décor.
  2. ‘Out of sight, out of mind’ is the philosophy you want to adopt when you organise your room, but that doesn’t mean kicking the mess under your bed and calling it ‘tidying’. Invest in some good under bed and hidden storage solutions, whether it’s trundle boxes, a hollow bench seat or baskets in a shelving unit, to make sure that mess isn’t the first thing you see every time you want into your room.
  3. Make sure there’s a place for everything and keep everything in its place – even your smallest items. Properly organise your jewellery with specially-designed storage units and put small things like coins, watches and trinkets into trays, drawer dividers or boxes.
  4. If your space isn’t particularly large, maximise the furniture to ensure it can store as much as possible. Swap out your bedside table with a trolley that has multiple shelves (or put one next to your desk for extra storage!), put a low-lying cube shelf at the food of your bed or reconfigure your room to make sure that you’re getting the most out of your space.
  5. The colours that you choose in your room will either help or hinder your newfound organisation, so make sure you stick to a colour-scheme that will empower you, but not distract you. According to colour theory, both blue and light pink produce a calming effect, while violet connotes peace.
  Your desk
  1. Make sure that you can clearly see what you’ve got coming up by mounting a calendar on the wall… the bigger, the better! You don’t need to pick up a boring one from the newsagent, either – the internet is piled high with cool templates that you can print and stick on a clip board. You can also add a pin board to stick up important reminders or special memories (just keep it tidy, too!).
  2. If you’re short on floor or desk space, make the most of the walls! Floating shelves are a life-saver when it comes to keeping things out of the way, and they can also act as a decorative feature (if you keep them nice and tidy).Invest in some baskets if you’ve got things you need to store on your shelves that you don’t necessarily want on display.
  3. Ensure that all of those loose objects (your pens, pencils, rubbers, washy tape, etcetera, etcetera) are kept off your desk – think of it as your work surface and keep it free of  unnecessary clutter. Pen cups, magazine folders and file racks will really help you here.
  4. Nothing ruins productivity like having to sift through a pile of forgotten junk. Sort out anything you put on your desk before it can turn into a pile, which will require having special spots for absolutely everything – school task sheets, forms, workbooks, you name it!
  5. Organise your drawers so that you can always find that bright yellow highlighter or spare roll of sticky tape. This will also do wonders for your stress levels – it’s hard to keep a clear head when you can never find anything you’re looking for (or are too scared to look in your drawers in the first place!).
  Your closet
  1. Constantly feel like you’ve got a closet full of clothes, but nothing to wear? It’s time to cull your wardrobe. Go through every single item and donate or give away anything that doesn’t fit, look good or ever see the light of day. You’ll be amazed how many clothes you actually have (and love) at the end of the process.
  2. Perfect your folding technique to make sure that your closet doesn’t get out of control. Marie Kondo – the Queen of Organisation – has plenty of tips for folding your clothes floating out there on the internet!
  3. If you have hanging space in your wardrobe, make the most of it! Make sure your coat hangers aren’t taking up too much space (thin, non-slip ones – covered in velvet or rubber – are the best) and invest in some hanging storage to store your belts, scarves, jewellery or even your shoes.
  4. There’s no point having an organised wardrobe if you don’t know where to look for something, so sort your items in a way that makes sense to you. Colour coding or organising your clothes by category (shirts together, skirts together, etc) are two of the most common ways to do this, and you can even combine them both to make your space extra-organised.
  5. There’s no point taking up precious wardrobe space with chunky jumpers if it’s summer, so always swap out your seasonal pieces throughout the year and store your unneeded items away in vacuum-seal bags. This will also give you a good opportunity to decide what you want to hold onto for another year, and what you’re ready to part ways with.
