Bedroom style secrets from an interior designer

Everyone loves updating their bedroom, but it can make all the difference having some guidance from a pro. Enter, Gabby Townsing, interior design extraordinaire from The Fat Cushion. Completely overhauling the look and feel of your bedroom is no mean feat, so it pays to have a game plan going into it – there’s nothing worse than moving six items of furniture around, only to find that you preferred things how you had them before.

Gabby from the Fat Cushion says that, when it comes to updating your bedroom, start by making sure your existing furniture fits well in your room. This will give you a good base to work from, and also means you can figure out any pieces you need to invest in or revamp. “Before you move any furniture, do a big declutter and decide what you want to keep,” says Gabby. “I always invest in some quality plastic tubs to store the things I really love, take photos of other items to keep for memories and then donate usable items to charity.” Move furniture around if you have the space, but make sure that you consider practical things like where your power points are positioned before you make any big changes. Then, it’s time to decorate! “Start with an item that you love – whether it’s a quilt cover, a cushion or a piece of artwork – and build on that using the colours as your inspiration,” says Gabby. “Choose timeless colours like whites, neutrals and soft colours like pinks and blues.”

When decorating, add lots of texture instead of too many colours and patterns. If you are adding colour, charcoal and black accents will give the space a more grown up look, too. The golden rule? Less is more – which is good news for your budget. Work out how much you want to spend on the project, and the items you’re willing to invest a bit more in. Things that you won’t grow out of, like a quilt cover, are the best investments. “Remember, functionality is just as important as style, so figure out some ways you can maximise the storage in your new bedroom without compromising the look,” says Gabby. Baskets on shelves, extra hooks on the back of your door and tubs that fit into your wardrobe or under your bed are great examples of options that will offer practical, invisible storage. When it comes to your desk, it’s all about creating a space that makes you want to sit down and study – you can personalise it, but make sure it’s not surrounded by distractions. Cute pencil tins, a pin board and stationery storage are good examples. But the most important thing to remember? “Have fun with it, and don’t feel like it has to be too grown up!” says Gabby.   For more design expertise, head to www.thefatcushion.com.au.
